news from Greece

My friend Sasha has written from Greece -she asks for her letter to be spread and having read the attached blog one can see why....

"I am sure that you will have heard some versions of current events in Greece on your local news.

I would like to ask you to take just a few moments to look at the article linked to here: http://sturdyblog.wordpress.com/2011/06/18/democracy-vs-mythology-the-battle-in-syntagma-square/

I spend most of the year in Athens. I have participated in the protests that have only recently begun to be covered by the world media. This is an entirely accurate summary of the situation. Although the first few lines of the article may seem melodramatic, it contains valuable and accurate information, and the tone sums up the feeling on the streets of Athens right now.

Please have a look, and pass it on to anyone who you believe might be interested, if for no other reason than to raise awareness of the circumstances surrounding the tragedy that Greece, and a number of other countries are facing, and to help to dispel media misinformation."

A Greek Tragedy? I don't think so...

Transparency International (TI) has reported that corruption is at the heart of the Greek economy. Having worked there for 7 years I have seen blatant tax avoidance at the highest of levels.

Greeks have to pay to have their application for a driving licence speeded up, for planning permission, to receive treatment in a public hospital or to have the results of a tax assessment manipulated. The Black economy exists at every level of society.

The Greek Government set the tone by fiddling the books and the population followed therein.

I know nothing -Im an occasional tourist to Greece, thats all. Its clear there ss a debate as to the economic collapse there. What caused the collapse essential info to work out what to do? And how to stop the repeats in other countries? In the meantime I'm growing vedg., collecting rainwater and bottling fruit.

Why don't we do it in the Aude said...

Oh dear, something touched a nerve!! When the ignorant insult and imply racism you know you are on the right track.

We agree on one thing, read the blog, everyone should as a lot of work has gone into it. Pity is wasn't better directed as a modicum of balance may have introduced some honesty. But that's not the point is it?
