en fete

l write to the accompaniment of the uncomplicated base line of Abyss, the band that often play our fete. Most of our friends are in the square trying to drink enough to be not-embarrassed by their subsequent dancing. Here is the lorry unloading Abyss's stage, dry ice, lighting rig and cossies in the square earlier today.

Before the evening kicked off it was the AGM of the MJC. The mayor came and made a speech about how well we'd done and I could not but agree. Here he is, being nice to Kate our President; and when is the election?
Many of the MJC are on the committee des fetes who run the festival weekend so we didn't run late. Pete and Annie came round and we caught the carnivalistes playing and twirling, this year with additional self-flagellation by pop-poms. Abyss defeated us though.
Tomorrow its Calysta. Better get some sleep in now.

Quite so; I was astonished when I read the towns budget and saw how much these bands are paid. Who actually likes them? In the attempt to get the proverbial something for everyone they have gone for the dreaded *professionalism* and ignored quality. The relationship with the performers to the admin of the town is fairly drole too... whats to do, eh? Start sending the committee some alternatives?

PS the notion of 'spectacle' is significant; they all think thats important, spectacle as in, its like that on TV.
